The following research aims to analyze, from the theory of social imaginaries, to the
national and international media, as means of production and construction of social
reality and social representations, from the information and news that these media
outlets spread about the demolition of the Monaco Building, located in Medellín,
Colombia on February 22, 2019. The research carried out revolved around the media
configuration that the media: El Espectador, Revista Semana, El Tiempo, BBC, The
New York Times and Agency EFE raised the event of the collapse of the building
built by the drug trafficker Pablo Escobar.
The project seeks to identify the type of social imaginaries that the chosen media
generate and reproduce from a series of categories proposed by researchers and to
contrast the informative treatment of each of these in relation to their nationality,
political orientation or belonging economic group.
On the other hand, to know what are the most common and recurrent imaginary that
people have about Medellín and about the Monaco building, understand what are
the reasons that even years after the death of this drug trafficker, their memory
continues to be associated with of a city and why a memorial park was built where
this structure was located
